Her father was an aeronautical engineer from La Paz, Bolivia, while her mother was of English and Scottish descent.

Welch's career took off in the mid-1960s when she played a crucial role in the science-fiction film, Fantastic Voyage. Her performance in the movie earned her a contract with 20th Century

Fox, which allowed her to work on other movies such as One Million Years B.C., Bandolero!, 100 Rifles, Myra Breckinridge, and Hannie Caulder. She was also featured in several television variety specials during her career.
